A couple of weeks ago I blogged about how to use the single sentence translation interface from the Office Research Pane SDX (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!593.entry). To my surprise, the sample code got a lot of downloads, so I decided to publish yet another project - this time describing how to interface with BV from a simple Winforms application. So why would anyone want to do that? Well, I can think about a couple of scenarios:
translate local files from your desktop: you can process unsupported file types, transform them into HTML and publish them
add multi-language support to help files: this is move of a dev scenario - you can use a similar technique to translate help files from your application directly
translate database entries: can't think about any good example but, well, it's possible...

It's yet another very simple project: a web browser control and a couple of text boxes...
The communication with BV is made thru the Office Research Pane Query services (HttpQuery.aspx). The code basically reads a text file and build something that looks like HTML using a template, and them POSTs the content to the Query service:
The only point I think that is not very straight forward is the Encoding part... We need to specify the right Encoding so that the HTML body we post to the service is not converted into a bunch of weird characters. As you can see in the code, the value is passed to both an Encoder object (to convert the html body for posting) and to the Http header collection. Aside from that, it's all up to the Query services and BV to handle the request.
There's also some basic code that handles a simple file read and a table lookup that converts the language pair (BV style) into CultureInfo lcid codes (as required by the service).
As of 15 min ago, the prototype is no longer accepting translations - if you try to use it it will forward you to TBot.
I'm going to keep it active for one more week, and then switch it off definitely - TBot is working pretty well and scaling up much better than I could have guessed.
I was a great ride! In a couple of months you'll be introduced to yet another project - stay tuned...

So this is day 3, and TBot still rocks! And let me remind you guys that so far we got minimum press coverage. So far, it's all been blogger to blogger communication, and surprisingly enough we got tons of users already!
That said I see no reason for anyone to still use the old prototype! Please, please, please upgrade to TBot! I need to re-purpose my server (a new pet project, maybe???) but in order to do that I have to phase-out the old code.
Be brave! Make the switch! Once you go TBot you'll never go Prototype again...

It probably went unnoticed - much like most of the great things our group does - but as of yesterday anyone who hits any of our online properties will see this:
Hidden behind this simple label lies a whole lot of work - from both the incubation and the research team. It means that we're now unblocked, free to drive forward driving quality, performance and scalability. It also means we have ways to adapt our systems to better serve users, either by improving the translation quality or by offering more languages. It's a *major* accomplishment!
However, change never comes for free. We'll have to go thru a couple of releases to fine tune the new system settings and until then I totally expect hiccups... Welcome to the word of live services!!! (Actually, we should be the poster child for the whole Software+services initiative... There's nothing cooler than seeing apps using our translation services under the hood :-))

Because we finally have a full featured product based on the Live Agents platform that is stable, scalable and reliable. TBot is more than a pretty face... It has several advantages over the old prototype, like the following:
Interface language auto-detection: TBot knows which language you speak, so it can talk to you in your idiom (we currently support localization in all source languages we support)
Change language pairs: TBot supports changing the language selection after a conversation is started, so you can select *any* of the current source languages to practice your language skills

In the coming weeks I'll blog about other differences between TBot and the prototype. Also, I'll be adding messages to my code announcing the product in the hopes users will start switching to the real thing sooner than later. I'm hoping I can keep the two bots running in parallel for a while before switching the good old prototype off.

Yesterday we had the second Backchannel event, this time around with two chat sessions with members from the Photosynth group(http://photosynth.net/Default.aspx). The technology is amazing, and much like the World Wide Telescope (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/) is another great example of one side of Microsoft that most of the press conveniently chooses to ignore... Anyway, I'll stay away from the controversies and concentrate on the event itself.
Once again the sessions used the Multi-Language chat room I wrote a while ago (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!502.entry) - totally re-vamped I must say. This time around the room was configured to support up to 50 users and 5 languages - English, Portuguese, Chinese Simplified and Dutch. The UI still looks pretty dull and unattractive (uh... Spartan would sound more appropriated, no?) but it now isolates the messages from the Moderator from the noise in the chat room. The experience is still bilingual by definition, it just behaves different.
The first session in the morning was a total mess from the translation perspective... The person in charge of transcribing the conversations as Moderator was flooding the chat room with short messages that were fragments of sentences - which not only made the queues grow exponentially but also defeated the purpose of having any translations... On top of that, with the queues totally out of control, the visitors could not post their questions in time - a huge problem giving that the whole purpose of having the chat room is to allow people to ask questions!!! Just to give you guys an idea, it took almost 20 minutes after the session ended to clean up the queues...
Back to the drawing board, I tried to change things a little bit trying not to de-stabilize the code with huge "improvements" (we all know what happens in situations like that). We also talked about the transcription issue and were able to replace the fragmented input with sentences and paragraphs. As a consequence, the second session went *much* better. I could finally ignore the chat and concentrate on the presentation - and I can guarantee that the product kicks a** .
Ontem nós tivemos o segundo evento de Backchannel, esta com duas sessões do bate-papo com membros do grupo de Photosynth (http://photosynth.net/Default.aspx). A tecnologia é surpreendente, e bem como o telescópio mundial (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/) é um outro grande exemplo de um lado de Microsoft que a maioria da imprensa convenientemente ignora… Em todo o caso, eu permanecerei longe das controvérsias e concentrar-me-ei no evento próprio.
Mais uma vez as sessões usaram o chat room multilíngue que eu escrevi um tempo atrás (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!502.entry) - razoavelmente melhorado. Esta vez o chat foi configurado para suportar até 50 usuários e 5 línguas - ingles, português, chines simplificads e holandes. AUI continua sem charme e desinteressante (uh… Espartano soaria mais apropriado, certo?) mas agora isola as mensagens do Mediator do ruído no chat room. A primeira sessão na manhã era uma confusão total da perspectiva da tradução… A pessoa responsável de transcrever as conversações como o Mediator inundava o chat room com as mensagens curtas que eram fragmentos das sentenças - o que causou não somente as que as filas cresçecem exponencialmente mas tambem derrubou a finalidade de ter as traduções… Fora isso, com as filas totalmente fora do controle, os visitantes não podiam fazer suas perguntas a tempo - um problema enorme dado que a finalidade do ter o chat room é exatamente permitir que os pessoas façam perguntas!!! Para dar-lhe uma idéia do impacto, demorou quase 20 minutos após a sessão terminada para limpar as filas…
De volta à mesa de projecto, eu tentei mudar as coisas tentando não desestabilizar o código com “melhorias enormes” (nós todos sabemos o que acontece nas situações como essas). Nós também discutimos sobre a transcrição e conseguimos substituir a entrada fragmentada com sentenças e parágrafos. Consequentemente, a segunda sessão foi *muito* melhor. Eu pude finalmente ignorar o bate-papo e concentrar-me na apresentação - e eu posso garantir que o produto é muito legal.
It's been a while since I publish any sample code... Anyway, yesterday I got permission to publish a simple "how to" guide on using the newly deployed Office Research interface to our translation systems. The generic Office Research Pane SDK is very well documented, and it's downloadable at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d3fc8129-63f7-43b5-8d99-de4058ade0ec&displaylang=en - I have no intentions to dive in implementation details so please check the link if you want to know more about the schema, etc...
So, without further delay, here is the pointer to the zip file:
It's a very simple ASPX sample, so you should have no problems running it (VS 2005 for now). Once you start it, you should see this very complex UI:
The numeric value above the button is the culture code for the target language (the sample assumes that the source will be English US). I've added comments with the supported culture codes:
The web service call is rather simple. The only parameter is an Xml formatted string, for which I created a template that is modified according to the user input:
So the click event handler simply replaces the values in the template string with the correct parameters and invoke the web service:
The rest of the code deals with getting the response back (also in the form of an Xml formatted string) and fetching the translations and the provider information:
Note that translations can fail for many reasons, and if you're building an app that relies on it you should consider showing the original sentence instead of an error message. Also, note that the proxy class is a simple web reference to the Query service:
and this is it... Now here's a couple of suggestions for you brave folks who feel like playing with the interface:
build a Winforms app using the proxy and the template string
implement the bot "jump" command: translations from X to Y using English in the middle (ex: Japanese to Portuguese would require two calls to the web service, one from Japanese to English and a second one from English to Portuguese)

É um exemplo muito simples de ASPX, assim vocês não devem ter nenhum problema para rodar (VS 2005 por enquanto). Uma vez que você o começa, você deve ver este UI muito complexo:O valor numérico acima do button é o código da cultura para a língua destino (o exemplo assume que a fonte será Ingles Americano). Eu adicionei comentários com os códigos de cultura suportados.
A chamada do web service é bastante simples. O único parâmetro é uma string formatada como Xml, para a qual eu criei um modelo que pode ser modificado de acordo com os inputs do usuário.
Assim, o event handler do clique simplesmente substitui os valores na string com os parâmetros corretos e invoca o web service.
O resto do código trata de receber de volta a resposta (também sob a forma de uma string formatada como Xml) e de recuperar as traduções e a informação do sistema.
Notem que as traduções podem falhar para muitas razões, e se vocês estm construindo apps devem considerar mostrar a sentença original em vez de uma mensagem de erro. Também, notem que a classe do proxy é uma referência simples ao Query web service.
Pronto… Seguem algumas sugestões para aqueles que quizerem brincar com o exemplo:
construa um Winforms app usando o proxy e a string modelo
implementeo comando “jump” do bot: traduções de X a Y usando o inglês no meio (ex: O japonês ao português exigiria duas chamadas ao web service, uma de japonês ao inglês e segunda de inglês ao português)

And I'm back from vacations... Too short, it's all I can say. But at least I have good (and now old) news to share! Our Office integration interface is finally live, and available for all to use. Aside from sentence by sentence translations, the interface also supports the 'Translate the Whole Document' feature (and I must admit it's my favorite for obvious reasons). This extends our Bilingual Viewer interface to any unprotected document you can open with Word, which in my humble opinion is way better than any existing Office translation engine.
So how do you use it? It's quite simple... Much like any other Microsoft Office Research Service you have to first go thru the registration process. Once you register the engine, everything should work automatically. The video below should give you a good idea of how everything works:
Needless to say that you only have to register once...
In the coming weeks I'll describe the interface in details, and if possible I'll include some C# code that uses the interface to invoke BV (I'll try to convert some of my test code and publish it). Alem das traduções sentença a sentença, a interface igualmente suporta a função“traduzir a o documento inteiro” (e deve admitir que é minha favorita por razões óbvias). Isto estende nosso Bilingual Viewer a qualquer documento desprotegido que você possa abrir com Word, o que na minha opinião humilde é muito melhor do que qualquer outro sistema de tradução para Office.
Assim como você usa-o? É muito simples… Assim como todo o outro serviço de pesquisa de Microsoft Office você tem que primeiro completar o processo de registo. Uma vez que você regista o sistema, tudo deve funcionar automaticamente. O vídeo acima deve dar-lhe uma boa idéia de como tudo trabalha...

For some of you that have been following the blog for a while it may not come as a surprise the fact that I have a tendency to assume things are way more clear than they are... This may yet be considered another example...
I just had an interesting IM discussion with someone that wanted to use our translation services in his web site. I told him we have plans to come up with our extensibility story, so that partners can integrate translations easier avoid the current workarounds required by the current IE8 Activities style of integration. At this point in the conversation I found out that he had no clue what I was talking about...
So let's rewind to March '08 (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!404.entry) - IE8 shipped with an integrated interface to our translation services. If you monitor the traffic (HttpWatch for IE) you will notice that the Preview feature is translated into a POST to an ASPX page:
Well, if that's the case, anyone posting a form request with the same elements will get a translation right? Correct, and that's exactly my point: regardless of whether we have a well documented API or now, text translation services are already available for everyone. An guess what? this is exactly the way MTBot sends the requests to the translation system...
This is a very (very) basic web page that submits a text input for translation... No, seriously - that's it. The form is posted to the backend for translation AND the response is sent to the IFRAME. Use the MKT parameter to select the display language (Spanish in this case) and the lp parameter to select the language pair for the translation (in this case English to Spanish).
The markets normally match the CultureInfo culture name (in the format xx-yy); the language pairs can be retrieved from the same page you fetch - just right click on the frame body and "view source" and you will find the list of language pairs. Currently the list includes:

zh-cht_en = Chinese Traditional - English
nl_en = Dutch - English
en_ar = English - Arabic

Eu tive uma discussão via IM muito interessante com alguém que quer usar nossos serviços de tradução em seu Web site. Eu disse-lhe que nós temos planos futuros para nossa história da extensibilidade, de modo que os partners possam integrar as traduções mais facilmente, evitando os workarounds exigidos pela interface estilo Atividades IE8 atual. Neste momento na conversa eu que ele não tinha a menor ideia do que eu estava falando…
Deixe-nos assim rebobinar a Março '08 (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!404.entry) - IE8 Beta foi lançado com uma interface integrada a nossos serviços de tradução. Se você monitora o tráfego (HttpWatch para o IE) você observará que a essa interface foi implementada via Http Post paraa uma página de ASPX (veja primeira figura acima).
Bem, se esse é o caso, qualquer um que mande um POST contendo um FORM com os mesmos elementos pode gerar uma tradução? Correto, e este é exatamente esse meu ponto: não obstante o fato de nós não termos uma API bem documentada, os serviços de tradução do texto já estão disponível para todos. E tem mais: esta é exatamente a maneira que MTBot emite os pedidos para o sistema da tradução…
Quer algo ainda mais fácil? tente o codigo HTML publicado acima.
Este é um exemplo muito (muito) básico de uma Web page que submete uma entrada de texto para a tradução… Não, serio - é isso mesmo. O formulário é enviado para tradução e a resposta é emitida ao IFRAME. Use o parâmetro MKT para selecionar a língua da UI (espanhol neste caso) e o parâmetro lp para selecionar o par de línguas para a tradução (neste caso de inglês para espanhol).
O MKT normalmente é o nome da cultura do CultureInfo (no formato xx-JJ); os pares de idiomas podem ser recuperados da mesma página que você busca - apenas right-click sobre o corpo do frame e "view source” e você encontrara a lista de idiomas. Atualmente a lista inclui:

zh-cht_en = tradicional chinês - inglês

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the our Live Translator button to appear in the Google Toolbar gallery... The submission goes ok, I get a confirmation page back and that's it - the button pretty much disappears and it's nowhere to be found if you search for it...
That said, I guess the last option is to publish a link to it here in the blog - it's not a perfect solution but maybe the Technorati tags can help with discoverability.
I've tried it many times in both Firefox 2.0 and 3.0, so I expect it to work for everyone (and the content is localized, so you should see the messages in the Google Toolbar language). Please let me know if you have issues installing it.
Eu realmente não sei o que eu estou fazendo errado, mas eu não consigo que o nosso botão para o Live Translator apareça na galeria de Google Toolbar… A submissão vai está bem, eu recebo uma página de confirmação e para por ai - o botão desaparece e não está em nenhuma parte ser encontrado se você procurar por ele…
Dessa forma, eu suponho que a última opção é publicar uma ligação aqui no blogue - não é uma solução perfeita mas talvez os Tag de Technorati podem ajudar com discoverability.

No, I'm not tired of the old theme - I like it way better than the bright white background... However, I have a great reason to change it, and it should be right at the top of the page: the embed messenger web client. I know, it's not exactly new. I guess I just didn't realize how easy it is to setup it up an start accepting messages.
Não, eu não sou cansado do tema velho - eu gosto muito mais do que esse fundo branco brilhante… Entretanto, eu tenho uma grande razão para mudá-lo, e deve estar na parte superior dessa página: o widget do Messenger para web clients. Eu sei, ele não é exatamente nada de novo. Eu apenas não sabia que era tão como fácil o setup para começar a aceitar mensagens.
I'm getting too old for this - seriously... I almost freak out yesterday - twice - but at the end of the day the two chat sessions with the World Wide Telescope guys ran quite smooth (bugs in my code, for sure, but no crash or major disruption of service).
Long story short: the folks on DPE (Academic Evangelism) are starting a series of chats with people that work with some cool technologies inside Microsoft, giving the audience the opportunity to ask questions and watch interact directly with the teams. I love the idea - reaching out to users is great. However, part of the audience would require translations to languages other than English. The answer came in the form of a multi-language chat room, with audio/video stream and a "moderator" that would transcribe parts of the conversation to the chat. The English input would be translated to all available languages, and the input from each user would be translated first to English, and then to each other available language:
As you can see, I'm definitely *not* a UI person, but it worked pretty well for the most part (well, at least for something I put together over the weekend 10 days ago). The first session in the morning was a bit more chaotic: I quickly had my "oh sh..." moment when I saw the frequency of the messages reaching the server. They also ran into a bug I thought I had fixed - sometimes the English panel would show non-English sentences. It turned out to be a concurrence problem (ah, the irony... me, an ex- Performance and Stress engineer, having problems with concurrent processes...) that I was able to fix before the afternoon session. The second session at 4:30PM went much better - the only bug we had was that we "ran out of seats" because people were hitting F5 and the code was reserving multiple seats for the same user (who wrote this crap anyway???). Aside from that, things went really well.
Anyway, it was a pretty darn intense experience to have 20 to 30 people interacting with translation in such a fast, uncontrolled environment. I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen with the chat room prototype (I'm trying to convince DPE to fund a Silverlight version :-)), and I would also like to publish the code for others to maintain (I have no idea how to do it). It makes way more sense to me to have the Microsoft subs around the world hosting their own sessions, and customizing the chat room to their own needs - but again, I'm just yet another geek, right?
Eu estou ficando velho demais para isso - serio… Ontem eu quase tive um treco - duas vezes - mas no fim do dia as duas sessões do bate-papo com o time do World Wide Telescope funcionaram bem (erros em meu código, certamente, mas nenhum crash ou rompimento de serviço).
Abreviando a história: os pessoal do DPE (Evangelism académico) esta começando uma série de bate-papos com gente que trabalha com algumas tecnologias legais dentro de Microsoft, dando à audiência a oportunidade de fazer perguntas e interagir diretamente com as equipes. Eu amo a idéia - entrar em contato com os usuários é grande. Entretanto, parte da audiência exigiria traduções para línguas diferentes do inglês. A resposta veio sob a forma de um chat room multilíngue, com stream de audio/video e um “monitor” que transcreveria partes da conversação ao bate-papo. A entrada em inglês seria traduzida a todas as línguas disponíveis, e a entrada de cada usuário seria traduzida primeiramente ao inglês, e então para as outras línguas:

Como você pode ver, eu definitivamente *não* sou uma pessoa de UI, mas o prototipo funcionou no geral bem (bem, pelo menos para algo eu desenvolvi no fim de semana 10 dias atrás). A primeira sessão na manhã foi um pouco mais caótica: eu tive rapidamente meu momento “deu m…” quando percebi a freqüência das mensagens que chegavam no servidor. Os usuarios acabaram recebendo um erro que eu pensei que eu tinha reparado - às vezes o painel inglês mostraria sentenças não-Inglesas. Acabou que a raiz do problema era concorrencia (ah, a ironia… logo eu, um engenheiro de Performance and Stress tendo problemas com processos simultâneos…) que eu consegui reparar antes da sessão da tarde. A segunda sessão as 4:30 PM foi muito melhor - o único erro que nós tivemos era que nós “ficamos sem assentos” porque as pessoas pressionavam F5 e o código reservava assentos múltiplos para o mesmo usuário (quem escreveu essa porcaria de prototipo???). Com exceção disso, as coisas foram realmente bem.
Em todo o caso, foi uma experiência bem intensa ter 20 a 30 pessoas interagindo com a tradução em um ambiente tão rápido e descontrolado. Eu não tenho absolutamente nenhuma idéia o que acontecerá com o protótipo do chat room (eu estou tentando convencer DPE para financiar uma versão Silverlight:-)), e por mim eu publicaria o código para outros manterem (eu não tenho nenhuma idéia como a fazer). Faz muito mais sentido para mim ter as subsidiarias Microsoft em torno do mundo hospedando suas próprias sessões, e a personalizando o chat room de acordo com as suas próprias necessidades - mas outra vez, eu sou apenas um outro geek, certo?

the Live Writer translation Plug-in in ready. It should still go thru a couple of test cycles, but should be released as a Power Toy (i.e. more than a prototype and less than a product) soon.

I've been involved with another pet project (those things are addictive!) - a proposal for a multi-language chat room to help with some group presentations (actually, Galileu Vieira from Channel 10 was the one that suggested the idea). Tomorrow they will try it for the first time...
Now, there's one toy we've developed a while ago that we simply can't get delivered: a Google Toolbar button... The files work, and I can manually add them to any GToolbar installation. The functionality mimics the one we deployed for the Live Toolbar (http://gallery.live.com/liveitemdetail.aspx?li=9ca66480-2d87-4341-87f6-86875d9a0908&pl=3&bt=2) and it works fine with either IE or FireFox 2.0 However, we can't seem to be able to upload it correctly - it simply doesn't show up in the gallery. Anyone has a clue of might be happening? I'd like to release it properly rather then putting a link to the files here, but maybe there's no other way...

o PlugIn de tradução do LiveWriter ficou pronto. Deve ainda atravessar um par ciclos do teste, mas deve ser liberado como um PowerToy (isto é mais do que um protótipo e menos do que um produto) em breve.
nossa proxima release de produto incluirá dois componentes novos muito legais - eu não posso dizer muito neste momento mas está indo muito bem.

Agora, há um aplicativo que nós desenvolvemos a algum tempo e que nós simplesmente não conseguimos fazer o deployment: um botão para o Google Toolbar… Os arquivos funcionam, e eu posso manualmente adicioná-los a qualquer a instalação de GToolbar. A funcionalidade imita aquela que nós nos deselvolvemos para o Live Toolbar (http://gallery.live.com/liveitemdetail.aspx?li=9ca66480-2d87-4341-87f6-86875d9a0908&pl=3&bt=2) e funciona muito bem com ou o IE ou FireFox 2.0. Entretanto, nós não conseguimos transferir arquivos pela rede corretamente - simplesmente não aparece na galeria. Qualquer um tem um indício do pode estar acontecendo? Eu gostaria de liberá-lo corretamente ao inves de por os links para os arquivos aqui, mas talvez não haja nenhuma outra maneira…
Andrea Jesse is a PM in our group (say Hi, Andrea!) and she was down between the enemy lines in Silicon Valley demoing our technology a couple of weeks ago. It's actually a great way for you guys to know a little more of what we're planning on releasing in the near, and not so near future. I'm using my lunch break to blog about a new feature that I implemented yesterday and will probably be the first that will raise eyebrows from my fellow colleagues here in MSR-MT... I'll get to it soon, but first here's some background (a faded attempt to prove that I'm not THAT crazy...): if you somewhat follow machine translation you probably noticed that many other online translators offer more language combinations than we (http://translator.live.com) do. While some of these offerings are totally legit and deserve all respect, some are well... uh... not so straightforward. The reason is actually quite simple: some tools use English as the middle ground for translations they don't support natively. What this means is that the user (most of the time without knowing) sends a sentence that is first translated to English, and then translated to the target language. The result as you probably can guess is a broken translation multiplied by two...
That said, I must stay true to my own self imposed mantra - any translation is better than no translation - right? So why not try this uh... technique and see how people react? I though about it for a while and decided to make this selection very explicit to the user as opposed to hiding it as just yet another menu selection. Long story short: we now have a new command - bot*jump [code of the language] - that works for all languages but English and tells the bot to translate twice (X to English and then English to Y). Here is the video clip describing a typical session:
The overall result is that now all 10 languages supported by the greetings (I still don't have Korean resources :-( ) can be translated to any of the 11 target languages - 110 language pairs???!!!

Eu estou usando minha pausa para o almoço para escrever sobre uma nova feature que eu implementei ontem e que provavelmente será a primeira que levantará as sobrancelhas de meus colegas companheiros aqui em MSR-MT… Eu explico logo, mas primeiramente vou tentar dar algum fundamento básico (uma tentativa desvanecida de mostrar que eu não sou louco…): se você segue artigos de tradução automática você provavelmente já observou que muitos outros tradutores online oferecem mais combinações de idiomas do que nós (http://translator.live.com). Embora algumas (a maioria) destas implementaçoes sejam totalmente legitimas e merecerem todo o respeito, alguns são… uh bem… não tão corretas. A razão é realmente simples: algumas ferramentas usam inglês como passo intermediario para traduções entre idiomas que não suportam de forma nativa. O que isto significa é que o usuário (na maioria das vezes sem saber) emite uma sentença para que seja traduzida primeiramente ao inglês, e em seguida traduzida então à língua destino. O resultado como você provavelmente pode supor é uma tradução quebrada multiplicada por dois…
Isso dito, eu devo permanecer verdadeiro a minha própria mantra - alguma tradução é melhor do que nenhuma tradução - certo? Assim porque não tentar esta uh…técnica e considerar como os usuários reagem? Eu pensei sobre como implementar este modo e decidi por fazer esta seleção muito explícita ao usuário ao contrário de esconde-la como sendo apenas uma outra seleção de menu. Well, I guess it's pretty clear by now that I'm not good at Marketing... If there's a reason I will never get rich is my total inaptitude to spin things around so that they look more complicated than they really are :-). I guess this is yet another good example...
One of the driving motivators for me to start the prototype project about one year ago (in the form of a bot) was the fact that Messenger is everywhere - those guys have tons of clients: desktops, tablets, web (thin), and Smartphones. Leveraging their tremendous penetration power would mean that every Messenger client can be in fact a bot client, thus a Translator.
That said, ever since the bot was released one year ago everyone that carries a Smartphone around has a portable translator... That's right, folks: it's as simple as connecting two existing technologies together... So, if you had problems trying to find your way back to the hotel in your last trip to another country don't blame me! Also, the Messenger web clients should work with other portable devices, so it does get better: everyone that has a phone that can access the web has a portable translator!
I've talked about this scenario to some people during TechFest and during the Summit as well. Most people where really surprised to find out this option exists (even people in my group didn't realize it), so I guess it deserves a blog...

The only annoying thing about the thin clients (all of them) is that you have to keep on clicking 'Refresh' to get the response faster (otherwise you have to wait a couple of seconds). If you have a Smartphone with Messenger Mobile the experience is much better, and you can even use the Text-to-Speech feature (bot*say) to play audio back (if you are really asking for help you'll find that some fonts can be quite hard to read).
So when you go to Beijing for the Summer Olympics take the bot with you (someone from Mobile should create an add with this... Oh well...).
Bem, eu suponho que a essa altura do campeonato já seja bem claro que eu não sou bom de Marketing… Se há uma razão eu nunca vou ser rico é minha inaptitude total para manipular coisas de modo que pareçam mais complicadas do que elas são :-). Eu achoe que este é um outro bom exemplo…
Um dos fatores que me motivaram para começar o projeto do protótipo aproximadamente há um ano (sob a forma de um bot) era o fato de que o Messenger está em toda parte - eles tem toneladas de clientes: desktops, tablets, web, e Smartphones. Aproveitar esse tremendo poder da penetração significaria que cada cliente do Messenger poderia ser de facto um cliente do bot, portanto um tradutor.
Esse dito, depois que o bot foi liberado um ano há todos que carregam um Smartphone por ai tem um tradutor portátil… E' isso mesmo gente: é tão simples quanto conectar duas tecnologias existentes junto… Assim, se você teve problemas tentando encontrar seu caminho de volta ao hotel em sua última viagem a um outro país não me responsabilize! E tem mais:os web client do Messenger funcionam com outros dispositivos portáteis, assim todos que tem um celular que possa acessar a web tem um tradutor portátil!
Eu cheguei a falar sobre este cenário durante TechFest e durante o Summit também. A maioria ficou surpreendida em saber que esta opção existe (mesmo gente em meu grupo não tinham conectado os dots), assim eu acho que merece um blogue…

A única coisa irritante sobre os Messenger webclients (todos, nao so' o MSN) é que você tem que se manter no clique “Refresh” para receber a resposta mais rápida (se não você tem que esperar um par segundos). Se você tem um Smartphone com Messenger Mobile a experiência é muito melhor, e você pode mesmo usar a característica Text-to-Speech (bot*say) para tocar o áudio (se você está pedindo realmente a ajuda vai descobrir rapidinho que algums tipos de letras podem ser realmente duras de ler).
Assim quando você vai a Pequim para os Jogos Olímpicos de Verão levee o bot com você (alguém do Mobile deveria criar um comercial com essa idea… Bom, fazer o que, ne'?…).
