Bad news first: the prototype has been having connectivity issues since Sunday. I'm still working on fixing whatever broke, but it may take a while.

The good news is that TBot is almost here! This friendly looking robot will soon be out there for all to use, so stay tuned!

Yesterday we had the second Backchannel event, this time around with two chat sessions with members from the Photosynth group(http://photosynth.net/Default.aspx). The technology is amazing, and much like the World Wide Telescope (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/) is another great example of one side of Microsoft that most of the press conveniently chooses to ignore... Anyway, I'll stay away from the controversies and concentrate on the event itself.

Once again the sessions used the Multi-Language chat room I wrote a while ago (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!502.entry) - totally re-vamped I must say. This time around the room was configured to support up to 50 users and 5 languages - English, Portuguese, Chinese Simplified and Dutch. The UI still looks pretty dull and unattractive (uh... Spartan would sound more appropriated, no?) but it now isolates the messages from the Moderator from the noise in the chat room. The experience is still bilingual by definition, it just behaves different.

The first session in the morning was a total mess from the translation perspective... The person in charge of transcribing the conversations as Moderator was flooding the chat room with short messages that were fragments of sentences - which not only made the queues grow exponentially but also defeated the purpose of having any translations... On top of that, with the queues totally out of control, the visitors could not post their questions in time - a huge problem giving that the whole purpose of having the chat room is to allow people to ask questions!!! Just to give you guys an idea, it took almost 20 minutes after the session ended to clean up the queues...

Back to the drawing board, I tried to change things a little bit trying not to de-stabilize the code with huge "improvements" (we all know what happens in situations like that). We also talked about the transcription issue and were able to replace the fragmented input with sentences and paragraphs. As a consequence, the second session went *much* better. I could finally ignore the chat and concentrate on the presentation - and I can guarantee that the product kicks a** .

Ontem nós tivemos o segundo evento de Backchannel, esta com duas sessões do bate-papo com membros do grupo de Photosynth (http://photosynth.net/Default.aspx). A tecnologia é surpreendente, e bem como o telescópio mundial (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/) é um outro grande exemplo de um lado de Microsoft que a maioria da imprensa convenientemente ignora… Em todo o caso, eu permanecerei longe das controvérsias e concentrar-me-ei no evento próprio.

Mais uma vez as sessões usaram o chat room multilíngue que eu escrevi um tempo atrás (http://mtbotprototype.spaces.live.com/blog/cns!3F1A4578DEE8B!502.entry) - razoavelmente melhorado. Esta vez o chat foi configurado para suportar até 50 usuários e 5 línguas - ingles, português, chines simplificads e holandes. AUI continua sem charme e desinteressante (uh… Espartano soaria mais apropriado, certo?) mas agora isola as mensagens do Mediator do ruído no chat room. A experiência é ainda bilíngue por definição, apenas comporta-se diferente.

A primeira sessão na manhã era uma confusão total da perspectiva da tradução… A pessoa responsável de transcrever as conversações como o Mediator inundava o chat room com as mensagens curtas que eram fragmentos das sentenças - o que causou não somente as que as filas cresçecem exponencialmente mas tambem derrubou a finalidade de ter as traduções… Fora isso, com as filas totalmente fora do controle, os visitantes não podiam fazer suas perguntas a tempo - um problema enorme dado que a finalidade do ter o chat room é exatamente permitir que os pessoas façam perguntas!!! Para dar-lhe uma idéia do impacto, demorou quase 20 minutos após a sessão terminada para limpar as filas…

De volta à mesa de projecto, eu tentei mudar as coisas tentando não desestabilizar o código com “melhorias enormes” (nós todos sabemos o que acontece nas situações como essas). Nós também discutimos sobre a transcrição e conseguimos substituir a entrada fragmentada com sentenças e parágrafos. Consequentemente, a segunda sessão foi *muito* melhor. Eu pude finalmente ignorar o bate-papo e concentrar-me na apresentação - e eu posso garantir que o produto é muito legal.

It's been a while since I publish any sample code... Anyway, yesterday I got permission to publish a simple "how to" guide on using the newly deployed Office Research interface to our translation systems. The generic Office Research Pane SDK is very well documented, and it's  downloadable at http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d3fc8129-63f7-43b5-8d99-de4058ade0ec&displaylang=en - I have no intentions to dive in implementation details so please check the link if you want to know more about the schema, etc...

So, without further delay, here is the pointer to the zip file:

It's a very simple ASPX sample, so you should have no problems running it (VS 2005 for now). Once you start it, you should see this very complex UI:

The numeric value above the button is the culture code for the target language (the sample assumes that the source will be English US). I've added comments with the supported culture codes:

The web service call is rather simple. The only parameter is an Xml formatted string, for which I created a template that is modified according to the user input:

So the click event handler simply replaces the values in the template string with the correct parameters and invoke the web service:

The rest of the code deals with getting the response back (also in the form of an Xml formatted string) and fetching the translations and the provider information:

Note that translations can fail for many reasons, and if you're building an app that relies on it you should consider showing the original sentence instead of an error message. Also, note that the proxy class is a simple web reference to the Query service:

and this is it... Now here's a couple of suggestions for you brave folks who feel like playing with the interface:

• build a Winforms app using the proxy and the template string
• implement the bot "jump" command: translations from X to Y using English in the middle (ex: Japanese to Portuguese would require two calls to the web service, one from Japanese to English and a second one from English to Portuguese)

And if by any chance you decide to use this implementation in your web site, give us some credit, will you? We're a pretty small incubation team, and we need to boost our visibility :-). Here's the credits jpg:

Já faz um tempo  desde que eu publiquei códigos de exemplo, protanto aqui vai um… Ontem eu recebi permissão para publicar um guia simples de como usar a interface de tradução do Office Research SDK. O SDK do Office Research Pane é muito bem documentado documentado, e é  carregável @ http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?familyid=d3fc8129-63f7-43b5-8d99-de4058ade0ec&displaylang=en - Eu não tenho nenhuma intenção de mergulhar em detalhes de implementação portanto cheque o link se você quizer saber mais sobre o esquema, etc….

Assim, sem mais atrasos, está aqui o ponteiro para o zip:

 

É um exemplo muito simples de ASPX, assim vocês não devem ter nenhum problema para rodar (VS 2005 por enquanto). Uma vez que você o começa, você deve ver este UI muito complexo:O valor numérico acima do button é o código da cultura para a língua destino (o exemplo assume que a fonte será Ingles Americano). Eu adicionei comentários com os códigos de cultura suportados.

A chamada do web service é bastante simples. O único parâmetro é uma string formatada como Xml, para a qual eu criei um modelo que pode ser modificado de acordo com os inputs do usuário.

Assim, o event handler do clique simplesmente substitui os valores na string com os parâmetros corretos e invoca o web service.

O resto do código trata de receber de volta a resposta (também sob a forma de uma string formatada como Xml) e de  recuperar as traduções e a informação do sistema.

Notem que as traduções podem falhar para muitas razões, e se vocês estm construindo apps devem considerar mostrar a sentença original em vez de uma mensagem de erro. Também, notem que a classe do proxy é uma referência simples ao Query web service.

Pronto… Seguem algumas sugestões para aqueles que quizerem brincar com o exemplo:

• construa um Winforms app usando o proxy e a string modelo 
• implementeo comando “jump” do bot: traduções de X a Y usando o inglês no meio (ex: O japonês ao português exigiria duas chamadas ao web service, uma de japonês ao inglês e segunda de inglês ao português)

And I'm back from vacations... Too short, it's all I can say. But at least I have good (and now old) news to share! Our Office integration interface is finally live, and available for all to use. My team's official blog has a pretty detailed step-by-step description on how to configure Word to use our translation systems - check http://blogs.msdn.com/translation/archive/2008/08/11/office-2003-setup-instructions.aspx for details. 

Aside from sentence by sentence translations, the interface also supports the 'Translate the Whole Document' feature (and I must admit it's my favorite for obvious reasons). This extends our Bilingual Viewer interface to any unprotected document you can open with Word, which in my humble opinion is way better than any existing Office translation engine.

So how do you use it? It's quite simple... Much like any other Microsoft Office Research Service you have to first go thru the registration process. Once you register the engine, everything should work automatically.  The video below should give you a good idea of how everything works:

Needless to say that you only have to register once...

In the coming weeks I'll describe the interface in details, and if possible I'll include some C# code that uses the interface to invoke BV (I'll try to convert some of my test code and publish it). E estou de volta das férias… Demasiado curtas, é tudo que eu posso dizer. Mas pelo menos eu tenho a boa (e agora velha) notícia para compartilhar! Nossa interface com o Office está finalmente em Produção, e disponível para todos. O blogue oficial da minha equipe tem uma descrição passo a passo consideravelmente detalhada em como configurar o Word para usar nossos sistemas da tradução - de uma olhada  em http://blogs.msdn.com/translation/archive/2008/08/11/office-2003-setup-instructions.aspx para detalhes. 

Alem das traduções sentença a sentença, a interface igualmente suporta a função“traduzir a o documento inteiro” (e deve admitir que é minha favorita por razões óbvias). Isto estende nosso Bilingual Viewer a qualquer documento desprotegido que você possa abrir com Word, o que na minha opinião humilde é muito melhor do que qualquer outro sistema de tradução para Office.

Assim como você usa-o? É muito simples… Assim como todo o outro serviço de pesquisa de Microsoft Office você tem que primeiro completar o processo de registo. Uma vez que você regista o sistema, tudo deve funcionar automaticamente.  O vídeo acima deve dar-lhe uma boa idéia de como tudo trabalha...

Desnacessario dizer que você somente tem que registar uma vez…

Nas proximas semanas eu descreverei a interface em detalhes, e se possível eu incluirei algum código de C# que usa a interface para invocar BV (eu tentarei converter e publicara lgum código de teste).
