We just updated http://translator.live.com with our new release (I'll blog about it when I have time) and apparently the bot is having issues sending the translation requests. I'll get it fix as soon as I can -  that pretty much means when I get home, as you well know by now.

Also, on the good news front: I got new resource files for Japanese and Italian thanks to Takako and Dario. Hopefully this will help make both end user experiences a little better.

Nós acabamos de actualizar http://translator.live.com com uma nova versão (eu escreverei a respeito quando eu tiver tempo) e aparentemente o bot está tendo dificuldades em mandar os pedidos de tradução. Eu vou consertar assim que eu puder.

Também, no lado bom da historia: Eu recebi novos resource files para japones e italiano graças a Takako e a Dario. Eu espero que isto ajude a melhorar a usabilidade para ambos os idiomas.

In my attempts to protect the bot from attacks I ended up reconfiguring the system without the German, Spanish and English voices - my bad...

Everything should be back to normal. I just tested it and got a wave file that sounds like German to me!

I'm not seeing many people using the Text-to-Speech features, but in case anyone else is interested things should be back to normal - all 4 voices are working: Spanish, German, French and English.

Ontem eu notei que quando fechei o sistema para defende-lo contra os ataques dos hackers eu acabei desconfigurando as vozes de Espanhol, Alemao e Ingles. Copiei um arquivo antigo e o bot ficou "mudo" por uns bons dois dias.

As coisas devem estar funcionando de novo. Acabei de testar TTS para Alemao, e o arquivo voltou rapidinho como deveria ser.

The attack I'm dealing with is a classic denial of service: several IPs seem to be sending dummy messages at a pretty darn high rate. As I block the IPs from creating conversations, the queue grows and the bot ends up too busy discarding to process any valid message.

Well, I have no smart router at home, so building any filtering rule is out of question - the IPs change all the time.

That said, I'm trying something a little risky, but that seems to contain the problem. Every time I detect I'm getting behind (as in the queue is growing too fast) I reset all pending requests.

I've tested the "fix" and it seems to work around the problem - let's see how long will it take until they come with something else.

Bom, acho que achei um jeito de contornar o problema. Nao sei quanto tempo vai funcionar, mas por enquanto eu to conseguindo limpar os pedidos invalidos na queue sem ter que gastar muito tempo de CPU.

Espero que de pra evitar ataques muito severos... Acho que vai dar pra segurar muita coisa....

A couple of months ago I mentioned that there are people out there determined to take the bot down. I still can't understand what so appealing to these jerks, but nevertheless they succeeded. Kudos jerks, you are now blocking hundreds of people from using a free service - ain't you guys good?

I'm not going to be able to reset the bot any time soon - I'm at work and the bot runs from my home computer. Also,I have no idea how to throttle traffic to avoid attacks coming from ghost machines - seems a huge waste of my time, actually. So I can't promise this will ever be fixed.

I would apologize for the downtime if it was my fault, but it's not the case. Someone out there must be really proud right now, because for every hour I spend every night trying to close vulnerability gaps it seems 10 new morons try to attack the bot. I'm starting to think it's just not worth it at all...

A um tempo atras eu bloguei a respeito de uns ataques que o bot estava sofrendo, e como eu tentei defender o sistema implementando uma lista negra. Bom, infelizmente nao consegui cobrir todos os casos e hoje finalmente conseguiram tirar o bot do ar. Meus parabens,  voces conseguiram atacar um executavel que roda em um computador domestico e agora tiraram do ar um servico gratuito utilizado por centenas de usuarios todo dia... Uau, voces sao bons mesmo...

Estou no trabalho e o bot roda em casa, entao nao tenho como reseta-lo. Pra dizer a verdade nao tenho nem ideia e nem motivacao pra tentar entender o que esta' acontecendo: e' muito trabalho por nada.

Bom, vou tentar ver o que consigo, mas nao tenho muita esperanca. Para cada hora que eu passo depurando os problemas a cada noite parece que 10 novos imbecis decidem hackear o bot. Fica dificil manter a paciencia.

So here is the French voice... And the French Greeting! "Salut" now selects French as the source language, which allows you to then select English or German as target language.

TTS sequence is the same as usual, and the voice is quite good. Give it a try, I'm sure you'll agree with me.

E finalmente achei tempo para incluir a voz para Frances... E tambem incui Frances como uma das opcoes de idioma - "Salut" ativa Frances e permite que voce escolha Ingles e Alemao como idioma alvo.

O processo para gerar o arquivo wave e' o mesmo dos outros idiomas. A voz tambem e' muito legal. Experimentem - tenho certeza que voces vao concordar comigo.
