Text-To-Speech is done :-). Yes, it's slow... Yes, it's not the best quality audio - the voice is one 8K (telephone quality)... But you know what? It works !!! This is the beauty of coding a prototype project that is not associated with any product (or even a product team): I can have fun just making things work together.

Anyway, this first implementation only works for sentences translated to English - if I hear good feedback I'll beg people around here to send me voices for other languages. I guess I can implement TTS for 3 or 4 other additional languages, if it's something people like.

Alright, so how do you use it? Simple... Start a session using English as the target language. Once you go thru all the greetings handshake, you can start your normal conversation. At any time you can say "bot:say followed by one space and your sentence. The bot will acknowledge the command by echoing "say" back and then it will translate your sentence. Once the text is translated, TTS starts and generates a wave file in my personal site. If everything goes ok, the URL of the wave file is returned back to the conference - click on it and you'll hear the audio.

Enjoy and send your comments - I'm not going to bother implementing any other language if I'm the only one that finds this thing cool :-).

E o Text-To-Speech ficou pronto... Agora voce pode ouvir as traducoes para Ingles - é bem verdade que a qualidade é baixa (estou usando uma voz padrao telefone) e tambem é verdade que o processo é lento. Mas que funciona, funciona!

Por enquanto so implementei Ingles. Se for bem aceito, vou tentar arrumar outras vozes - eu acho que consigo umas 3 ou 4.

Bom, o exemplo da figura acima descreve bem como funciona o dialogo basico. O comando é "bot:say", seguido de um espaco e da frase para traducao. O bot vai responder com "say" indicando que o comando foi recebido, e entao dispara a traducao. Quando a sentenca traduzida estiver disponivel, comeca o processo de geracao de audio. Quando o audio estiver disponivel, um pointer é retornado para a conferencia.

Comentarios sao sempre bem vindos - desta vez especialmente: eu nao pretendo implementar TTS para outros idiomas se ninguem se interessar pelo basico, que e' Ingles...

So we're now down to just two missing languages: French and Korean. Any volunteers???

Also, I noticed that many of you just want to play with the bot, switching target languages - try Japanese then switch to Italian, etc... In order to do that, you need to close the session with the bot first. You can now do it by typing "bot:bye" - you will notice that the bot will reply with "bye" and abandon the conversation.

Good news also on the Text to Speech front - the code is ready, but unfortunately the wave files generated are not public yet. I have to figure out a way to allow users to access the files from any device that runs Messenger, including Smartphones. I'll have it working until next Monday for sure, and then I'll send instructions on how to use the feature.

Eu tambem notei que muita gente so' quer brincam com o bot, tipo trocando de idiomas so' apra testar. Para fazer isso voce tem que encerrar a sessao de traducao ativa. Para tal, use o comando "bot:bye" - o bot ira responder com "bye" e abandonar a conferencia.

A funcao de Text To Speech esta' pronta e funcionando. Agora so' falta eu conseguir uma forma de disponibilizar os arquivos de audio para serem recebidos por qualquer um, mesmo em um Smartphone. Devo terminar tudo ate' Segunda feira que vem - afinal de contas ainda tenho que trabalhar, certo?

Bad news first: yesterday I found myself forced to implement something I really hate - a black list of contacts that will always be blocked from accessing the bot. I know it sort of contradicts one of the main goals of the project, which is try to identify any behavioral pattern for IM/MT interactions, however someone is trying to hook up their own bot with mine, sending tons of random sentences for no good reason. Not only it's annoying the hell out of me, but it's also consuming time and CPU resources from people that really want to use the bot. The black list will add emails to the blocked list, and will also block any attempt to re-insert the contact in the allowed list - sad but effective.

On the bright side of the planet, I'm really happy to announce that thanks to both Hupus (http://hupus.spaces.live.com/default.aspx) and Alex (http://alexmedianl.spaces.live.com) we now support Spanish to English and Dutch to English! The new greetings are hola to activate Spanish to English and gegroet to activate Dutch to English. The resource files were added last night, and I've also changed the "help" to try to make it a little more intuitive. I'm also making progress on the Text to Speech front - should be available in a couple of days.

I still need to localize Arabic, Italian, Korean, French and Chinese Traditional - any help is really appreciated!

Vamos as mas noticias primeiro: ontem eu me vi forcado a implementar uma coisa que eu detesto - uma lista negra de contatos. Alguem decidiu apontar um outro bot pro meu, e comecou a mandar zilhoes de frases aleatorias sem nem mesmo selecionar um idioma para traducao... Ai fica dificil - gastar CPU e tempo com esses caras e complicado.

Por outro lado, gracas a ajuda de dois voluntarios - Hupus (http://hupus.spaces.live.com/default.aspx) e Alex (http://alexmedianl.spaces.live.com)  - ontem eu adicionei Espanhol-Ingles e Holandes-Ingles ao sistema. Mudei tambem o help pra ver se fica mais amigavel.

O suporte para Text-to-Speech ta' quase pronto: em breve vai dar pra ouvir todas as frases que passarem pelo bot que forem em Ingles..

I can blame the lunar eclipse, alignment of planets or just plain bad luck - but I guess I'm supposed to sound a little more scientific so I'll try to stick to the facts... The bot had problems that ranged from bugs (in my code??? never!!!), network issues and finally translation cluster connectivity problems.

That said, most of those are fixed now, and the bot is up and running (I'm still using a much smaller translation cluster so expect unusual delays).

And just to give you guys some numbers to think about: while I was operating in "stealth" mode (meaning no one knew about the project) I had about 70-80 *active* users on a daily basis. Now thanks to Vikran's blog I have 970 (!!!) active users in average, and more than 1000 people added the bot to their contact list! Also, 25 other blogs are now mentioning mine... I can't say I'm not happy with my 15 seconds of fame, but please keep in mid that this is not a Microsoft product!!! Lower your expectations wrt availability or even performance - as I said before the bot runs on a normal PC under my desk, and is not optimized at all.

On the other hand, here are the two things I'm hoping I can implement soon:

• TTS: I came from the Microsoft Speech Server team (go MSS!!!) so playing with speech is really appealing to me. I'll add Text-to-Speech support for all English sentences - so if you translate from any language to English you will be able to send a message like bot:say, and the bot will transfer a Wave file back to you with the Jill's (American English default female voice) narration of the sentence. I imagine it can be helpful for people learning English, or for anyone traveling in the US with a Smartphone that needs help - just sent the sentence to be translated and then play the wave file to ask for assistance).
• Text in picture translation: the bot will soon be able to receive a picture (high res I hope!) and identify text in English, translating it according to the conversation languages.

If you look at some of the "Random Topics" blog posting you'll see two projects I've created to test the concept. It will be fun to see how people play with both of them...

Um montao de coisas erradas aconteceram junto na semana que passou. Foi so' tiram uns dias de ferias que tive problemas com o meu codigo, com a rede e com o cluster de traducao...

O pior ja' passou. Ainda estamos com problemas no nosso cluster principal de testes, mas pelo menos agora o bot ta' operacional (usando um outro conjunto de maquinas, bem mais fraquinho).

Em termos de numeros: depois que o Vikran blogou a respeito do bot o numbero de usuarios ativos pulou 10 vezes! Mais de 1000 pessoas adicionaram o bot aos seus contatos, e pelo menos 970 estam ativas por dia, em media... Muito legal, e e' claro que me orgulha o fato de tanta gente estar acessando o prototipo, mas por outro lado tenho que ficar lembrando o tempo todo que isso nao e' um produto Microsoft - e' apenas um programinha que roda em um PC debaixo da minha mesa no escritorio. Nao tentem comparar a performance desse coitado desse bot com outros produtos - nao da' nem pra' saida...

Por outro lado, o fato de nao ser um produto oficial me da' uma agilidade MUITO maior para explorar features e brincar com codigo... Por exemplo, estou pensando em implementar duas funcoes novas em breve:

• TTS: Eu trabalhei em um produto chamando Microsoft Speech Server, entao acho que da' pra' entender que sintese de fala e' uma das coisas que sempre que posso empurro goela abaixo dos meus usuarios :-). Estou pensando em implementar Text-to-Speech para todas as frases en Ingles usando a voz da Jill, que e' a voz deafult para Ingles americano. Funcionaria assim: voce mandaria um 'Oi' pro bot para selecionar Protugues-Ingles normalmente. A cada traducao que voce queira "ouvir" basta esperar a resposta e entao mandar um commando do tipo bot:say. O bot vai entao gerar um Wave file com a Jill falando a frase e transferir pra voce. Ai, e' so' tocar o Wave e pronto. Eu imagino que possa ser util para pessoas aprendendo Ingles, ou para alguem viajando aqui nos EUA com um Smartphone.
• Traducao de texto em imagens: o bot vai poder receber uma foto em alta resolucao de um texto em Ingles, reconhecer os caracteres e traduzir. De novo, acho que o uso tipico seria em viagens: olhou uma placa e nao entendeu? Tire uma foto e mande pro bot...

Eu ja' explorei ambos os conceitos em outros blogs com titulos comecando com "Random Thoughts" - tem codigo fonte e tudo mais. vai ser interessante ver como as pessoas reagem a estas implementacoes...

The Internet is an amazing thing.... Silly me decides to take vacations right after my dear friend Vikran blogs about the prototype (http://blogs.msdn.com/translation/archive/2008/02/15/to-bot-or-not-to-bot-im-translation.aspx) and boom! Suddenly, everyone and their uh... sister decide to add it to their contact list!!! And as a result I'm now getting an exception I never saw before - exceeded the maximum number of contacts !!! ???

I'm going to pull an allnighter to try to get it up running again, so please accept my sincere apologies for now.

And THANKS A BUNCH for the people that volunteered to help localize the bot to the other languages! As soon as I can I'll send you guys the resource files that support the greetings dialogs, so that we can add more language pairs :-)

Caramba! Sai de ferias um dia depois do Vikran bloggar a respeito do bot (http://blogs.msdn.com/translation/archive/2008/02/15/to-bot-or-not-to-bot-im-translation.aspx) e de repente 25 outros blogs apontam pro meu, e zilhoes de pessoas decidem tentar usar o bot! Resultado: to encontrando uma erro que eu nunca vi antes - estourei o numero maximo de contatos permitido!

Vou trabalhar pra concertar o problema, entao por enquanto nao me resta outra opcao senao me desculpar por qualquer problema que o blackout possa estar causando.

It's been a while now since I released the bot in the open, and to my surprise it's been extremely reliable...

That said, it's kind of interesting to see what people are actually doing with it. I can divide the typical daily usage summary in four groups:

1. The teens: they curse at the bot every night.... They seem to enjoy the fact I did not add any filtering system to it. Well, what can I say? Boys will be boys...
2. The casual users: interesting group... They use it as a dictionary, more than anything else. At first I thought most of these people were just testing the system, then I realized some of them do come back. Normally they interact with the bot by themselves, and they don't invite anyone else.
3. The loyal crowd: yes, there's a group of people that always use the bot to help in their conferences and other multi-party IM interactions. I'm pretty proud of that, I must add :-).
4. The hackers: believe it or not, there are a group of individuals that have some sort of automation running against the bot... they normally open a new conversation each 2 seconds, and leave it lingering around.

So even though I can't quite figure out why anyone would have any interest on hacking the bot, I guess I need to clarify some points again:

1. This is not a Microsoft product... If you succeed in taking it down, you'll be just affecting a desktop machine under my desk that is not even part of the Microsoft network - sorry guys, no backdoors here...
2. The bot itself is an EXE, not a service. I have a cmd loop around it, so when it crashes it simply closes on instance and opens another - not too exciting either...

O bot ja' esta' funcionando faz um tempo, e para a minha surpresa, as coisas tem funcionado muito bem!

Tenho observado o uso diario do bot e posso dividir os usuarios em quatro grupos bem distintos:

1. Os "teens": a garotada adora xingar o bot... Parece que e' a unica hora que eles escrevem Ingles correto (claro, senao nao conseguem traduzir nada). E e' claro, so' conseguem porque eu nao filtro nada que e' enviado...
2. Os casuais: normalmente mandam uma frase aqui, outra ali... parece que usam como dicionario mais do que tradutor, e normalmente nao convidam ninguem para uma conferencia - falam sozinhos com o bot.
3. Os fieis: meu grupo predileto, claro. Sao pessoas que usam o bot do jeito que ele foi desenhado para funcionar, ou seja como intermediario de uma conferencia IM. E' interessante perceber como as pessoas passam a se adaptar ao bot, escrevendo frases mais simples e corretas para conseguir melhores resultados... muito bom!
4. Os "hackers": toda noite, sem falta, tem um grupo de usuarios que tentam derrubar o bot... abrem dialogos um atras do outro sem falar nada - automacao, claro.

Bom, mesmo sem entender a motivacao desses tais hackers, vou esclarecer alguns pontos:

1. De novo mais uma vez once again: este nao e' um produto Microsoft... Se voces conseguirem derrubar o bot, so' vao estar afetando um desktop mixuruca que roda debaixo da minha mesa - serio,  a maquina nem faz parte do dominio Microsoft...
2. Eu implementei o bot como um executavel, nao como um servico. E tem um loop cmd em volta do bicho. Entao, quando o bot crasha uma execucao termina, e outra comeca assim que possivel. Ta' legal, 2, 3 segundos de downtime nao e' bom, mas para um prototipo nao e' nada mal.
