Machine Translation - the Bot, the project and everything in between...

I really don't know what I'm doing wrong, but I can't get the our Live Translator button to appear in the Google Toolbar gallery... The submission goes ok, I get a confirmation page back and that's it - the button pretty much disappears and it's nowhere to be found if you search for it...

That said, I guess the last option is to publish a link to it here in the blog - it's not a perfect solution but maybe the Technorati tags can help with discoverability.

Anyway, here's the shortcut to add the button:

I've tried it many times in both Firefox 2.0 and 3.0, so I expect it to work for everyone (and the content is localized, so you should see the messages in the Google Toolbar language). Please let me know if you have issues installing it.

Eu realmente não sei o que eu estou fazendo errado, mas eu não consigo que o nosso botão para o Live Translator apareça na galeria de Google Toolbar… A submissão vai está bem, eu recebo uma página de confirmação e para por ai - o botão desaparece e não está em nenhuma parte ser encontrado se você procurar por ele…

Dessa forma, eu suponho que a última opção é publicar uma ligação aqui no blogue - não é uma solução perfeita mas talvez os Tag de Technorati podem ajudar com discoverability.

No, I'm not tired of the old theme - I like it way better than the bright white background... However, I have a great reason to change it, and it should be right at the top of the page: the embed messenger web client. I know, it's not exactly new. I guess I just didn't realize how easy it is to setup it up an start accepting messages.

I was browsing around minding my own code when I hit this page here: ttp://www.soulsolutions.com.au/Articles/MessengerIMControlPresence/tabid/123/Default.aspx - a good tutorial that pointed me here: http://settings.messenger.live.com, and in no time I had the client running... Actually, anyone can add a reference to the bot to their pages just by copying the code snippet below...

Não, eu não sou cansado do tema velho - eu gosto muito mais do que esse fundo branco brilhante… Entretanto, eu tenho uma grande razão para mudá-lo, e deve estar na parte superior dessa página: o widget do Messenger para web clients. Eu sei, ele não é exatamente nada de novo. Eu apenas não sabia que era tão como fácil o setup para começar a aceitar mensagens.

Eu estava de bobeira procurando outras coisas quando eu bati esta página aqui: ttp: /www.soulsolutions.com.au/Articles/MessengerIMControlPresence/tabid/123/Default.aspx - uma boa referencia que me levou aqui: http://settings.messenger.live.com, e em minutos eu coloquei o cliente rodando. Eu transferi arquivos pela rede mostrando “como usar o widget” para o  Soapbox, mas eu não estou certo se a definição é boa bastante.

Você pode mandar mensagens usando suas próprias credenciais, ou anònima - o bot não se importa:-).

I'm getting too old for this - seriously... I almost freak out yesterday - twice - but at the end of the day the two chat sessions with the World Wide Telescope guys ran quite smooth (bugs in my code, for sure, but no crash or major disruption of service).

Long story short: the folks on DPE (Academic Evangelism) are starting a series of chats with people that work with some cool technologies inside Microsoft, giving the audience the opportunity to ask questions and watch interact directly with the teams. I love the idea - reaching out to users is great. However, part of the audience would require translations to languages other than English. The answer came in the form of a multi-language chat room, with audio/video stream and a "moderator" that would transcribe parts of the conversation to the chat. The English input would be translated to all available languages, and the input from each user would be translated first to English, and then to each other available language:

As you can see, I'm definitely *not* a UI person, but it worked pretty well for the most part (well, at least for something I put together over the weekend 10 days ago). The first session in the morning was a bit more chaotic: I quickly had my "oh sh..." moment when I saw the frequency of the messages reaching the server. They also ran into a bug I thought I had fixed - sometimes the English panel would show non-English sentences. It turned out to be a concurrence problem (ah, the irony... me, an ex- Performance and Stress engineer, having problems with concurrent processes...) that I was able to fix before the afternoon session. The second session at 4:30PM went much better - the only bug we had was that we "ran out of seats" because people were hitting F5 and the code was reserving multiple seats for the same user (who wrote this crap anyway???). Aside from that, things went really well.

Anyway, it was a pretty darn intense experience to have 20 to 30 people interacting with translation in such a fast, uncontrolled environment. I have absolutely no idea what is going to happen with the chat room prototype (I'm trying to convince DPE to fund a Silverlight version :-)), and I would also like to publish the code for others to maintain (I have no idea how to do it). It makes way more sense to me to have the Microsoft subs around the world hosting their own sessions, and customizing the chat room to their own needs - but again, I'm just yet another geek, right?

Oh, and go try the World Wide Telescope (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/ ): it's absolutely incredible...

Eu estou ficando velho demais para isso - serio… Ontem eu quase tive um treco - duas vezes - mas no fim do dia as duas sessões do bate-papo com o time do World Wide Telescope funcionaram bem (erros em meu código, certamente, mas nenhum crash ou rompimento de serviço).

Abreviando a história: os pessoal do DPE (Evangelism académico) esta começando uma série de bate-papos com gente que trabalha com algumas tecnologias legais dentro de Microsoft, dando à audiência a oportunidade de fazer perguntas e interagir diretamente com as equipes. Eu amo a idéia - entrar em contato com os usuários é grande. Entretanto, parte da audiência exigiria traduções para línguas diferentes do inglês. A resposta veio sob a forma de um chat room multilíngue, com stream de audio/video e um “monitor” que transcreveria partes da conversação ao bate-papo. A entrada em inglês seria traduzida a todas as línguas disponíveis, e a entrada de cada usuário seria traduzida primeiramente ao inglês, e então para as outras línguas:

Como você pode ver, eu definitivamente *não* sou uma pessoa de UI, mas o prototipo funcionou no geral bem (bem, pelo menos para algo eu desenvolvi no fim de semana 10 dias atrás). A primeira sessão na manhã foi um pouco mais caótica: eu tive rapidamente meu momento “deu m…” quando percebi a freqüência das mensagens que chegavam no servidor. Os usuarios acabaram recebendo um erro que eu pensei que eu tinha reparado - às vezes o painel inglês mostraria sentenças não-Inglesas. Acabou que a raiz do problema era concorrencia (ah, a ironia… logo eu, um engenheiro de Performance and Stress tendo problemas com processos simultâneos…) que eu consegui reparar antes da sessão da tarde. A segunda sessão as 4:30 PM foi muito melhor - o único erro que nós tivemos era que nós “ficamos sem assentos” porque as pessoas pressionavam F5 e o código reservava assentos múltiplos para o mesmo usuário (quem escreveu essa porcaria de prototipo???). Com exceção disso, as coisas foram realmente bem.

Em todo o caso, foi uma experiência bem intensa ter 20 a 30 pessoas interagindo com a tradução em um ambiente tão rápido e descontrolado. Eu não tenho absolutamente nenhuma idéia o que acontecerá  com o protótipo do chat room (eu estou tentando convencer DPE para financiar uma versão Silverlight:-)), e por mim eu publicaria o código para outros manterem (eu não tenho nenhuma idéia como a fazer). Faz muito mais sentido para mim ter as subsidiarias Microsoft em torno do mundo hospedando suas próprias sessões, e a personalizando o chat room de acordo com as suas próprias necessidades - mas outra vez, eu sou apenas um outro geek, certo?

Oh, e tentem brincar com o telescópio mundial (http://www.worldwidetelescope.org/ ): é absolutamente incrível…

So I'm breaking radio silence after all... I've been sidetracked by my day job - lame excuse, I know... However, I have some good news to share;

• the Live Writer translation Plug-in in ready. It should still go thru a couple of test cycles, but should be released as a Power Toy (i.e. more than a prototype and less than a product) soon.
• our next product release will include two very cool new components - I can't say much at this point but it's gonna be really cool
• I've been involved with another pet project (those things are addictive!)  - a proposal for a multi-language chat room to help with some group presentations (actually, Galileu Vieira from Channel 10 was the one that suggested the idea). Tomorrow they will try it for the first time...

Now, there's one toy we've developed a  while ago that we simply can't get delivered: a Google Toolbar button... The files work, and I can manually add them to any GToolbar installation. The functionality mimics the one we deployed for the Live Toolbar (http://gallery.live.com/liveitemdetail.aspx?li=9ca66480-2d87-4341-87f6-86875d9a0908&pl=3&bt=2) and it works fine with either IE or FireFox 2.0 However, we can't seem to be able to upload it correctly - it simply doesn't show up in the gallery. Anyone has a clue of might be happening? I'd like to release it properly rather then putting a link to the files here, but maybe there's no other way...

Assim eu estou quebrando o silêncio de rádio após tudo… Eu me distrai com meu trabalho do dia - desculpa esfarrapada, eu sei… Entretanto, eu tenho alguma boa notícia a compartilhar;

• o PlugIn de tradução do LiveWriter ficou pronto. Deve ainda atravessar um par ciclos do teste, mas deve ser liberado como um PowerToy (isto é mais do que um protótipo e menos do que um produto) em breve.
• nossa proxima release de produto incluirá dois componentes novos muito legais - eu não posso dizer muito neste momento mas está indo muito bem.
• Eu estou envolvido com uns outros projectos particulares (essas coisas são aditivas!)  - uma proposta para que um chat room multilíngue que ajude com algumas apresentações de grupos (na realidade, Galileu Vieira do Channela 10 foi quem sugeriu a idéia). Amanhã tentá-lo-ão pela primeira vez…

Agora, há um aplicativo que nós desenvolvemos a algum tempo e que nós simplesmente não conseguimos fazer o deployment: um botão para o Google Toolbar… Os arquivos funcionam, e eu posso manualmente adicioná-los a qualquer a instalação de GToolbar. A funcionalidade imita aquela que nós nos deselvolvemos para o Live Toolbar (http://gallery.live.com/liveitemdetail.aspx?li=9ca66480-2d87-4341-87f6-86875d9a0908&pl=3&bt=2) e funciona muito bem com ou o IE ou FireFox 2.0. Entretanto, nós não conseguimos transferir arquivos pela rede corretamente - simplesmente não aparece na galeria. Qualquer um tem um indício do pode estar acontecendo? Eu gostaria de liberá-lo corretamente ao inves de por os links para os arquivos aqui, mas talvez não haja nenhuma outra maneira…

Andrea Jesse is a PM in our group (say Hi, Andrea!) and she was down between the enemy lines in Silicon Valley demoing our technology a couple of weeks ago. It's actually a great way for you guys to know a little more of what we're planning on releasing in the near, and not so near future.
